Rather than cutting acne foods all at once, swap one food at a time toward options that raise blood sugar more slowly, and write down your meals and new pimples for four weeks.

If you cut out acne foods, what should you eat instead?

Deciding what to swap in usually sticks better than a list of what to cut out. Mix whole grains into white rice, or trade a sugary drink for water, so the same meal leans toward foods that raise blood sugar more slowly.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), Korea’s national public health agency, explains that restricting foods alone cannot make skin clear, and that acne naturally gets better and worse on its own, which makes it hard to be sure any single food is the cause. A 2017 systematic review of acne and nutrition also concluded that only a small number of studies are strong enough to support real recommendations. So keeping your own record is more practical than memorizing a list.

Point to the things you eat often, like a glass of milk or a slice of bread, one at a time and choose what to swap them for.

White bread, white rice, or brown rice: which is better for acne-prone skin?

The evidence points toward a low-glycemic-load diet, so brown rice and whole grains sit closer to that direction than white rice or white bread. However, the sources behind this guide include no single-food study showing that brown rice by itself changes pimple counts.

In a 2007 randomized trial of 43 men, the group that ate a high-protein, low-glycemic-load diet for 12 weeks saw total lesions drop by 21.9, a bigger drop than the control group (13.8). That group also lost more weight over the same period, and the authors themselves said the effect of the diet could not be separated from the weight loss. In a 2020 comparison of 53 patients and 53 controls, eating more carbohydrates went along with higher severity scores, while fat intake showed no link.

Refined grains like white bread and white rice go on your log as candidates to swap for whole grains.

Should you stop drinking milk or just cut back?

Before quitting milk, start by writing down how many glasses you drink a day. In a 2018 meta-analysis pooling 78,529 people aged 7 to 30, 2 or more glasses a day had an OR of 1.43, higher than 2–6 glasses a week (1.24), but these were all observational studies, so milk cannot be named as the cause.

Low-fat and skim milk came out at an OR of 1.32, actually higher than whole milk (1.22), which does not fit the advice that switching to low-fat milk solves the problem. The link weakened in the adjusted analysis, and a 2025 review focused on adult women found that results differed from study to study. If you are an office worker who drinks two lattes every morning, logging four weeks with one latte a day is a reasonable test.

For milk, yogurt, and cheese, first write down how many times a day you have them before deciding whether to quit.

Do certain foods cause acne in teenagers?

We did not find evidence that singles out particular foods as bad for teenagers specifically. The dairy meta-analysis also grouped people aged 7 to 30 together, and while it showed a link, dairy was not confirmed as a cause.

It is easier to pick one thing that repeats, like cup noodles after practice or a soda from the school vending machine, and swap that. For a growing teen, changing the type of food at the same portion size is gentler than skipping meals or cutting portions sharply. Starting with one week of notes together with a parent quickly shows what comes up most often.

Your 4-week food swap log

Week One thing to swap Before → after New pimples (weekly total) Other things that week
Week 1 No change (baseline week) Just record usual meals, drinks, snacks Exams, period, new skincare, sleep
Week 2 Example: white rice at lunch One bowl of white rice → rice mixed half and half with whole grains
Week 3 Keep the week 2 swap Same
Week 4 Keep it and note the next candidate Same + note what to swap next

Put the week 1 total next to the week 3 and week 4 totals. If an exam week or the week before your period falls in the cycle, mark that week in parentheses and look at it separately. Do not draw a conclusion from one 4-week round; in the next 4 weeks, repeat the same steps with a different item, such as drinks or milk.

When is it time to book a dermatology visit?

  • If your pimple count stays the same after two 4-week swaps, consider seeing a dermatologist and bring your food log. KDCA also advises changing the approach if skin does not improve after 6 to 8 weeks of steady care from a medical provider.
  • If you have cut meals sharply or are losing weight quickly while changing your diet, stop the log and talk to a doctor.
  • If your periods keep being irregular along with the acne, bring your log to an appointment; as KDCA notes, a doctor may order hormone tests when needed.
  • If deep, painful lumps keep coming back or spread across your face, chest, or back, see a dermatologist regardless of your food log.

The evidence in brief

  • In a 12-week randomized trial of 43 men (Smith et al., 2007), lesion counts fell by 21.9 in the high-protein, low-glycemic-load group and by 13.8 in the control group (P=.01), and the effect could not be separated from weight loss.
  • In a meta-analysis of 78,529 people aged 7 to 30 (Juhl et al., 2018), dairy intake had an OR of 1.25 and 2 or more glasses of milk a day had an OR of 1.43, showing a link, but the studies were observational.
  • Korea’s national health information portal (KDCA) states that restricting foods alone cannot make skin clear.

Frequently asked questions

If I cut out foods that cause acne, what should I eat instead?

Swapping a partner food within the same meal tends to last longer than cutting everything. Mix whole grains into white rice or trade sugary drinks for water so you lean toward foods that raise blood sugar more slowly. Korea's national health agency (KDCA) also notes that restricting foods alone does not clear the skin.

Is white rice, bread, or brown rice better for acne-prone skin?

The research points toward a low-glycemic-load diet, so brown rice and whole grains sit closer to that direction than white rice or white bread. No study has tested brown rice on its own, though, so after you switch, keep notes on your skin for four weeks to see for yourself.

Are there foods that cause acne in teenagers?

We did not find evidence that singles out bad foods for teenagers alone. A meta-analysis pooling 78,529 people aged 7 to 30 found a link with dairy, but it was observational, so dairy was not confirmed as a cause. During growth years, change the type of food rather than the amount.
